With 40 years of professional experience in companies he established, John D. Stephens has specialized in heavy construction, piping for water/sewer infrastructure, construction equipment sales, real estate development, community banking and finance and more. Using this experience, John D. Stephens and his three sons Mike, Mark and Mitch founded Stephens Industries LP, LP in October of 2000.

To commence operations of the company, Stephens Industries LP purchased 485 acres of property adjacent to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and began work on a contract they were awarded to convey 16.5 million cubic yards of dirt and aggregate rock fill to help build the 5th Runway at the world’s busiest airport. This project is one of the largest construction undertakings in the economic development history of Atlanta, as the 5th Runway opened for flight operations in 2006.

Stephens continued to provide dirt and aggregate rock fill to the city of Atlanta for additional construction at the Airport, including 1.6 million cubic yards for the new International Terminal and 2.4 million cubic yards for building additional on-site improvements.

imageOne of the hallmarks associated with the Fifth Runway and International Terminal construction projects at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was the Stephens Industries LP 4.5 mile conveyor that crossed four major active highways, including Interstate 285.

This engineering feat prevented what would have been 400 on-road dump trucks per hour over a three-year period, which likely would have impacted traffic and safety, as well as wear and tear of area roadways and degradation of air quality for Clayton County residents.

The work of Stephens Industries LP at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is an example of the company’s expertise and business philosophy to provide the most efficient, economically viable and environmentally friendly solutions for major metropolitan site preparation and construction projects.

In addition to providing dirt and aggregate fill rock for ongoing projects at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Stephens Industries LP has obtained the necessary permits, equipment, and appropriate operations plans for its Construction & Demolition Landfill site, which is now being utilized by general construction contractors working in metro Atlanta and North Georgia.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division (EPD) approved the Stephens Industries LP design and operation plans for its Construction & Demolition Landfill and a Processing/Recycling Facility on October 5, 2006.

The Processing/Recycling Facility has been diverting construction and demolition debris from community solid waste landfills since the fall of 2008, helping the company further its mission.

These facilities now serve the growing number of general construction contractors working in metro Atlanta and North Georgia.
